Do you HAVE to go to school for it, or can you intern your way into it through a salon? %26amp; do you have to be board certified? Does it depend what state you live in?How to become a professional hairdresser?
Actually, contrary to popular belief, some states allow apprenticeship as a means to get the on-the-job training hours and education necessary to get your state cosmetology license. I believe Missouri is one of them, according to a guest blogger I worked with once. You basically work under a master stylist to get your beauty education.
However, not every state allows apprenticeship in lieu of school. It would be in your best interest to at least check out and contact a few beauty schools to get some more information. I included a site below that is excellent for that, plus they have lots of information about state-by-state licensing requirements. How to become a professional hairdresser?
Yes, you have to go to a school and earn so many credit hours. The school will teach you how to pass the state board exam. Once you pass the state board exam, you will be issued a liscense.
Some people will allow you to intern under them in a salon, but I wouldn't recommend going that route because it takes longer, you don't learn as much, and you take the risk of failing the state board exam. It costs money to go to state board as well. There are fees, supplies, hotel costs etc. A school will help with these expenses.
Go online and find the nearest Cosmetology school in your area.
It does depend on the state. They have different regulations. You might def need a high school diploma or some sort of GED. Then you cant apprenticeship until you have had at least 1200 hours in a school salon. Then again like i said it depends on where you live. A community college is always cheaper and i hear you learn the same stuff. Then once you accomplish your 1500 or 1600 hours you make an apt and appear in front of your state board if you pass you get your license or certificate depending on what you wanted to go for.
Definitely have to go to school for it and get certification. Otherwise you will not (legally) be allowed anywhere near anyone's head.
