Why does my hairdresser claim that having my haircut every 4-6 weeks will help it grow faster?

...Besides wanting my money, that is! I just don't understand how cutting the ends of something, which is growing out of my head will make any difference in how quickly it grows. Why does my hairdresser claim that having my haircut every 4-6 weeks will help it grow faster?
Cutting your hair only makes it shorter, does not affect the growth rate one iota, and cannot determine the length that your hair will grow to. Maximum hair length is determined by the shape and width of the hair shaft, and that is determined genetically and is not alterable with current technology.

Lastly, hair is neither healthy or unhealthy. It is in fact, dead. Else, it would really hurt to cut it. It is the health of the hair follicle below the outer skin that requires nutrients for good health, and no adverse hormonal activity.

So, unless you have split ends or chemically damaged hair, the only need to cut the hair is for the look that you want. A few things that you can do to ensure that your hair follicle remains healthy and your hair is undamaged, are:

Really nice article below maybe you should print it off for her/himWhy does my hairdresser claim that having my haircut every 4-6 weeks will help it grow faster?
Becauseof your split ends. If you dont trim them it continues to split up and your hair wont grow.
The ends, tips of your hair dry out, become brittle, break off and sometimes split. Trimming the ends regularly keeps your hair looking healthy, shiny and manageable.
Its to cut the split ends and dead hair off. If you only go in once a year or twice a year they will have to cut off a lot more to make it healthy.
no theres no prove
if you leave it any longer the ends of your hair die and your hair doesn't grow anymore. so if you cut them off, it will grow.
Because the more you cut or shave your hair the faster it grows. It grows immunity to scissors...
it won't, and only a short sculptured cut needs that much trimming, for shaping, not growth
It doesn't make it grow quicker.
becaus e it is true you shlould listen to her most people think it is supposed to be every 3 months but that is way off. Everyone should get a propper trim about every month
she means that if you trim your split ends. idk y but it actually works!
Well you have to get the split ends cut off. The're ugly and the longer you wait to get them cut off the more you'll have to cut.

Hope i helped!!
Lanie; You got it right.hair grows a 1/2 inch a month, if that 1/2 would make a difference in your style then cut it, if it

doesn't, then cut it, only when you feel it needs it, cutting doesn't make it grow any faster,as far as split ends, good care, not cutting prevents them
Because she's feeding into a common misconception. You're right. It doesn't make it grow faster, just makes it look healthier.
Well I am a professional and yes you should. Because when you hair splits and it always will on the ends and for most higher you have to cut it. Why? because when it splits it will keep splitting more and more so instead of one strand of hair you have many and finely it breaks off.
Trimming ends between 4 and 6 weeks, keeps your hair in top condition. You will be less likely to have split ends and breakage which can hinder new growth.

Your hairdresser is correct.
because if you have split ends they will break your hair off and if you don't cut them it makes the hair worse and the spilt ends go higher
because she needs to make money
it's cuz the part that she trims off every 4-6 weeks is dead hair or split ends, and split ends don't grow at all and over time it will gradualy get longer and and u will be growing healthy hair!!!

~Lindsay
because it removes the split ends which break and causes the hair to be shorter the hair grows a half an inch a month and your only removing the ends from a cosmetologist
